Willkommen bei Quinta da Lontra

DESCRIPTION
Situated in central Portugal, approx 60km east of Coimbra, we have a Quinta on 3 hectares of land bordering the Mondego river surrounded by woodland containing oaks, cork oaks, eucalyptus and mimosa.

We live in as sustainable a way as possible, growing and eating alot of our own fruit and vegetables. We have a variety of fruit trees on the land - kiwi, fig, apple, peach, plum and cherry. we have a raised bed vegetable garden which we´re developing on permaculture principles.

THE FAMILY
We´re originally from England and moved to this area of Portugal in 2009. We´re in the process of renovating our house, using as many ecological and reclaimed materials and techniques as possible.

Nina is a fantastic cook and a trained hypnotherapist, Toby has spent alot of his time over the past few years renovating the houses and looking after the land and plans to start making sculpture and installation art again, which he trained in.

We have 2 young children, Luca and Beatriz, 3 and 6 years of age, so there may be a bit of hanging out with the kids involved.

WORK ON THE QUINTA
There´s a lot of work to do on the farm! We´re currently seeking for people with the following skills:

- Competent in general building, carpentry and construction. We are looking for help with the building of a compost toilet and shower block for guests and wwoofers and also with general renovation of the guesthouse. We would also like to prepare and plant a green roof on our newly built studio space.

- Experience in general gardening and permaculture. This year we plan to extend our raised bed vegetable garden and to also clear and prepare other terraces for larger crop planting (potatoes, sweetcorn etc). We would also like to increase the number of fruit trees on our land and will be starting tree planting and pruning of existing trees in the next few weeks.

- This year we also intend to create an installation piece for the Boom festival in August so will be looking for creative people to help with this.

At present were looking for helpers from the 15th March to the middle of August 2014, with the option of staying longer. We ask all our helpers to work 30 hrs hrs a week, normally 6 hours a day 5 days a week, this is flexible..

Sometimes you´ll be working directly with us, sometimes with other helpers and sometimes you´ll have jobs that you can work on yourself.

FACILITIES FOR HELPERS
Accommodation for helpers during autumn and winter consists of 2 caravans close to the river. During the warmer months we also have 2 yurts. You´re welcome to bring your own tent, tipi or yurt if you wish, and we also have space at the top of the land for campervans.

We´re about to start construction of a separate composting toilet and shower block for our guests, at the moment there are facilities for cooking and a bathroom in the guesthouse that our helpers can use.

You´ll have lunch with us and we provide food for your breakfast and supper and for the weekend, (as often our helpers prefer to make their own food during their time off). Special diets can be catered for, please let us know in advance.

Wifi internet access is available for our guests, the connection is good but not fast enough for downloading or posting of large amounts of data. There are internet cafes with faster download speeds in both Tábua and Carregal do Sal

The local village is approx 1.5km walk up the valley and the towns of Tábua and Carregal do Sal are both approx 8km from us. There are bus and rail links to both of these towns from Lisbon and Porto, which are the main airports into this region.
