Welcome to Monte do Compromisso

We are a German couple in our mid-50s with a smallholding, 12 km from Ourique, Baixo Alentejo, near the border of the Algarve.
For 24 years we have been growing fruits, vegetables, and meat for home consumption. Prior to these 24 years cultivating Monte Do Comprimisso, we had a smallholding in Germany. In addition to our work at Monte Do Comprimisso, we have 3 grown children, Angelica is an artist, and Dieter works doing land managment and design.

We have a large biological garden from which we produce much of our food, we also keep several bee boxes for honey. Recently we have acquired many more citrus trees that have been giving much fruit.

Our largest focus is animal husbandry, raising, butchering, and preparing sheep, ducks, chickens (for eggs as well), and pidgeon. We generally keep around 20 sheep, and about a dozen ducks and chickens, as well as about 6 bee boxes.

Primarly we need help with clearing the land (cutting, moving, burning). Occasionally we need help with construction, and other larger projects, kitchen help as well. We build whatever we can, thus sometimes assistance with tasks such as welding and sanding may be helpful. In summertime there is always more work in the garden.

We are interested in WWOOFers who are happy to help throughout the day with the tasks of keeping a smallholding running. We are a sociable and friendly couple, enjoy the company of others, and are also flexible with personal space. We are serious about self-sufficiency, animal, and nature husbandry. We are sure you will have free and relaxing time, with beautiful nature trails to explore. At the same time, we are interested in and appreciate good, hard-working help! We do not intend to have WWOOFers here when we have nothing to do, so rest assured that we will not waste your time, either! We are less concerned with hours worked than with work accomplished.

We offer lovely, cosy, comfortable accomodation with wood stove, solar electricity, and running water, either in our house or a separate apartment, and of course, good home cooking. Though we butcher and eat meat, we are also willing to accomodate vegatarians. For the most prompt response, please email us directly.
