Welcome to AzoreanSpirit
Projects and work:
*Old orchard on the slopes of Pico Alto
We started with clearing and replanting some fruit trees (avocado, chestnut, orange trees, sugar cane), here we need to do a lot of further clearing and cutting old trees, exterminate the beautiful invasive Hedychium (wild ginger), cutting gras, planting flowers to attract bees and other useful herbs (composting, mulching). We intend to plant a lot more fruit plants like Bananas, Kiwi, Guave, Apricot, Olive trees and other exotic plants (we are still exploring what might grow at that place). Further we might find a well at least there is always little water running and we have to find out more about it (=digging), maybe we can even feed a little pond with that water.
*Hill beed
We would like to build at least one hill bed were we intend to plant the Kiwi’s and whatever. Probably there will follow more if it works out as we like.
*Palheiro - barn
Already we did some reconstruction and now need to finish it. There has to be done the roofing, the floor and a wooden wall, maybe we will set a door and a window as well and use a part of the building as a little storage room or even as “stay over night place” – with no running water or electricity (yet).
*Water tank
We like to construct a water tank for about 10-20’000 liters on a hillside were in old days was a little corral. So far we do not know how but maybe somebody out there has some experience?
*Fenching
The whole property approx. 7000 m2 should be fenched, maybe we can do some recycling with old fenches from a donator, that would mean a lot of digging, making holes, concret producing and carrying to the location (hilly), putting the fenche.
*Dry stone walling
There needs to be done some walling for supporting land and access.
*Fire wood
From the clearing of the old orchard will result a lot of useful wood for BBQing, somebody has to take care of that, you should know to use a motor saw, unless you like some workout ;-)
*Working in the garden
We have two more or less big gardens where there has to be done the usual gardening work like preparing the land for new plants, weeding, planting/seeding, watering, harvesting.
*Maintenance
There is always something to do around the house, cleaning, painting, little replacement works, taking care of the equipment etc.

Accomodation
Whom likes it adventurous could bring a tent and stay at the location, idyllic located on the slopes of Pico Alto, only 2 km from the village of Almagreira or 2.8 km from our place. Or you might stay at the camp ground right at the beach, only a 20 min ride (uphill) from our place. We do have mountain or e-bikes for you to get around. The adventurous option would only apply from July till September.
For the rest of the time you could stay either in the apartment (travelling as couple) or in one of our guest rooms (depending on booking situation of our Pensão Francisca). But this we have to figure out once you get in contact with us.
---
Working hours
We ask you to work approx. 25-30 hours a week, depending on your delight and our needs. That could be half days or some days in a row (i.e. 4 x 7 h), whatever is fine for you and us.
--
What do you get from us?
If you are staying in the tent, we supply you with food and beverage and of course help you to set up – probably we will have to do some improvisation as we just started with woofers.
Staying at our place, having all the advantages like our clients, you have free internet access, might use our equipment - if you like, we take you around the island, take you with us to go rock fishing or hiking etc.
--
As we are living on a small island everything is close by but be aware that it is a hilly island. Normally it is very quiet and relaxed. The main town is 5 km away, the beach (and beach park showing movies) 4 km, grocery store and snack-bar 800 m, discoteca approx. 3 km, in July and August there are several festivals and other fests taking place (i.e. folk in Maia, blues nights in Anjos, Mare do Agosto at Praia Formosa).
You might check with the host kallmeyers on the same island – stay there during summer and change to our place in autumn/winter – we are open for suggestions and welcome serious wwoofers.
Important: please check first travel costs before contacting us, thx
