We Have a Rural Cork farm in the hills of the Alentejo on a beautiful and very peacefull man made lake baragem da santa clara Ourique. Over the last 20 years our family has run summer camps / glamping and educational retreats. We want to create a retreat where people can live as one with the land with as little impact as possible on the surrounding (cork farm )environment.
Permaculture is where we are headed, but we are at the very beginning of this journey. We aim to create a campsite where people can either just enjoy the lifestyle or learn and create .
wwoofers with skills in Carpentry / permaculture / gardening / cooking / lifeguarding / first aid / artists / weaving / Cork collection are all very welcome.
we offer accomodation - camping style in tents or wooden huts live in vehicle park ups and food which is mostly vegetarian.
we are also seeking long term care takers over the winter months while we are working in the uk sept 2012 - mar 2013
We recently had all our solar equipment stolen so we are looking forward to the cork harvest in 2013 when we will be able to re invest in these again.
2013 will be a big year for us the cork cutters come in July and then we have to gather all the cork that has been cut and drag it to the main staying place where it will be left to dry for 1 month before it is weighed and sold. In Spring 2013 we will be preparing the land for the cutters - clearing paths to all the trees so easy access for them and us when we go around collecting it.
Its hard work no question about that and the heat in the summer is certainly a challenge. We tend to work the early hours 8-11 and then rest and play till 4 - 7 for the second shift to avoid working in the worst of the heat.
Luckily there is a beautiful fresh water lake to swim and play in.
We request that all washing soaps / shampoos etc are biological
june- September 2013 - come and meet us !!
July / August 2013 - land clearing and cork collectors needed
