We are a young family, Tania (Portuguese/German), Joe (Austrian) and our daughter Zaya. We have been volunteers for the last couple of years in different countries and decided that its time to become hosts ourselfs. Our search for land lead us to the village where Tanias grandparents live and we manage to aquire a little piece for us to live on.
Where we are?
Our land (12ha) is situated in the North of the Serra de Estrela, 10min south of Trancoso.
Our goals for summer, autumn 2018
In winter 2017 some serious earthworks have been created and this will be continued in the summer. That means working alongside the diggers, niveling and staking swales on contour; creation of checkdams and various waterharvesting structures.
Before the winterrains those earthworks will be planted with trees and fast legumes.
The work upfront is good and honest physical labor. If you are not fit now – you will be....
work is 5.5h a day, 5 days a week (0600ish-1130ish). Weekends free. We have to start early because its still cool.
Our goals in the longterm
Most of the flat, machineaccessable land (3.5ha) will be turned into a commercial nut-farm (Pistachio, Pecan, Macadamia, Hybridhazels, Walnuts,..)
The hilly land will be planted with mainly corkoaks, mulberries, Mesquites, diospyros, cedars and bamboos.
Steeper hills around are wildlife-habitat and will be planted sequioas, oaks, casuarinas, saksauls and wild-hedges. A fire-protection-belt/road is around the whole property
Sections of land will be made available to interested people - we are looking for good neigbours.
Accomodation and food
You will be living in our comfy house (kitchen, hot water) and have your own room. Camping is possible.
Food is plenty and rather opportunistic. Since we have a lot of aunties and uncles in the village with their own spectacular gardens we will be loaded with homegrown veggies. Not everything is certified organic but we try. Meat and fish is occasionally part of our diet. (weekend-barbecues).
