O Monte is situated 7km from the small town of Aljezur and 10km from the natural and wild beaches of the West coast. We are a Portuguese/English couple. The farm belonged to Rui's grandparents in the past and we have been working, cleaning and maintaining the land for 6 years. The vegetable gardens are extensive enough for us to be more or less self-sufficient through the year and provide produce to sell at the local farmers' market.
Work is always varied. The general, everyday tasks can include:
- preparation of land for transplanting/direct sowing
- sowing and transplanting
- maintaining growing crops
- feeding animals and cleaning their areas
- harvesting wild growing produce e.g. mushrooms, medronho, oregano
- preserving of produce
- maintainance and cleaning of woodland, cork oaks and stone pines
- compost making and turning
The work can be physically demanding.
From January to March the work is usually more physical as this is when we can clean the woodland areas and around the cork trees and stone pines so we particularly welcome people with experience in this type of work or experience with chainsaws or strimmers. It is also the time when we prepare the land and start planting and sowing. We have a large area of asparagus which needs lots of attention and harvesting. And, depending on the weather, harvesting wild mushrooms.
May and June are the main times for sowing, transplanting and maintaining the crops by watering, feeding and of course weeding.
Accommodation is a 4m yurt and we have a solar and wind powered shower and wash area.
The internet is limited here - no wi-fi on the farm but there is in the local cafe and Aljezur.
Sorry, no dogs.
