We (Ines 57 and Johannes 48) adore our remote and natural location, both physically and mentally challenging, but also providing freedom and ideal places for yoga and meditation. We started off with brambles within a eucalyptus forest and a ruina, which is now a wonderful little villa, including an (non-smoking) appartment with queen-size-bed, cooking facilities, shower, floor heating and panoramic sea view for our guests, or, alternatively, we can provide space for bus/caravan/tent with water and electricity access. There is good WiFi and mobile signal, however you need to bring your own SIM-card, we don´t provide WLAN. We have no telephone landline and no TV. Also we would ask you not to bring pets into the appartment.
Water is pumped from the well and maintenance for the entire water system is required. In summer the solar collectors provide hot water, but during winter heating of both water and home is derived from the eucalyptus, which includes wood work all year round. While we grow our own eco-vegetables we have no restrictions in diet. The long distance goal is to re-naturate the place with less eukalyptus and more native plants plus food forest and orchard areas as per permacultural principles. The current projects are to plant more fruit trees, set up the irrigation systems for new plant areas, maintain the compost and clean the land from the remainders of the devastating fire that hit Monchique this year. Secondary tasks are to build shelters for woofers (the previous wooden cabin sadly burnt down) including a pond and to build a chicken stable with a little greenery attached.
We expect about 5 hrs work/day with 1 free day/week, or as agreed in advance to your arrival. For leisure time we provide a hammock and sitting area in the small garden in front of the appartment, and we drive to the seaside more or less weekly, either to the South coast (25 min drive to Alvor) or West coast (45 min drive to Arifana/Aljezur). There is a bus to Portimao or Lagos from Caldas de Monchique to where we could take you for trips on your own.
This is a mesmerizing silent and very remote place with an awsome starry sky, the striking costal sea view of southern Algarve, clean air, fresh water, and maybe a hot mini-pool. If you are up for parties and people, this is not the place for you.
Current notes: We are fully booked currently and will summarize or experiences / re-adjust our strategies and visions in December/Januar. We may invite new woofers from February/March onwards. A big hug and thanks to all who stayed with us so far!
