Quinta do Rabo de Palha is a family farm where we breed serpentina goats and produce our own vegetables. We got the place three years ago and we have been doing everything from scratch: planting fruit trees, creating the vegetable garden, renovating the fences, building the barn for the goats, building the boreholes to extract the water with solar pannels , etc, etc... Much has allready been done but there is so much more to do...
Our project is creating an "almost" self suficient farm where we produce a substancial part of our food. We would also like to improve the hosting facilities at the farm so we can have people vising more often and be part of the farm life and get to known the nature arround us.
For this project to keep going, we have in mind the following tasks for the next months:
- Planting: fruit trees in the orchard; new hedges in some specific places for wind protection; maintenance of the vegetable garden;
- Infrastructures: improving the watering system of the vegetable garden and orchard.
- Building: a house for the chicken; a new compost toillet;
Although we don't live at the farm but in Castro Verde (only 2km away), we are there during day time. We have a small company of solar pannels and our office and storehouse is right next to the farm.
At the farm we have a caravan where the volunteers stay. There is also a compost toilet and a solar hot water shower. We also have solar pannels for lights and fridge. For cooking there is an outdoor cob kitchen with a gas cooker, sink, crokery and cooking pots. Unless volunteers prefer to cook for themselves, we usually have them for lunch with us at our home in town. For the rest of the meals, we supply the food for their own cooking.
