UPDATE: Until February we're not taking any more volunteers but if you speak Portuguese or Spanish there's another option: a lady from our family, that lives just next door, also has a big property that she's finding too hard to maintain by herself. She has some health problems and so she needs help around the house and clearing the overgrown fields. It's hard work! If you want to help with that send us a message.
Our property is not very isolated, it's in the woods but only a five minute walk from the nearest town Gafanha da Nazaré. We're also very close to the beach (Praia da Barra and Costa Nova), around half an hour by bicycle and just 5 minutes by car. Aveiro is just 10 minutes by car and from there you can also visit Porto very easily (it's only one hour on the train that will cost you 3,60€).
My mom and dad bought this property many years ago and little by little they built our family house. It's now almost two separate houses, since me, my husband and my two daughters live upstairs and the rest of the family lives downstairs. We're eight in total! Apart from the house, there's also my older brother's electric vehicles workshop.
There's only one smoker in the family, so most of the areas in the property are smoke-free. Nobody is a full on vegetarian but many of us prefer vegetarian meals. We make our homemade rustic bread once a week and also have some chickens for eggs.
WHY WE WANT TO BE HOSTS
We love to host backpackers and have friends from all over the world. We need help to make this property even more welcoming and efficient. There's so much potential but not enough working hands to make ends meet.
We have lots of fruit trees, pine trees and acacias. The main motor of the vegetable garden is my mom and because she was sick last year, everything is a bit disorganized. My father on the other hand is a bit of a Mcgyver and likes to keep all kinds of junk to build other things in the future.
Our main goal for this year is to tidy and amplify the vegetable garden, as well as clean the forest a bit so we have more beautiful green leisure areas. Maybe build a playground for the girls, and a barbecue/clay oven terrace.
WORKING HOURS/ TASKS
5 hours a day, 5 days a week. We'll plan the working hours with you depending on what you prefer to do and your skills.
(Electricity, hot water, wifi, phone reception is fine)
You can choose between staying outside in a tent or staying with us inside the house. Inside we have a guest room with a double bed, two nightstands, a dresser, big wardrobe and a mirror. Right outside the door there's a bathroom with a shower that you'll share only with my brother. Because it's a spacious double room, we are willing to take one or two volunteers that want to share it. We can provide bed linen, towels and blankets. We are happy to host a couple (LGBT are welcome too). It's not a luxurious house by any means, but we hope that we can make you feel as comfortable and at home as possible.
Public transports are about half an hour walk, but we're happy to give you lift or let you use an electric scooter to explore the surroundings.
