The gardens of the "Quinta das Mil Flores" are a collection of gardens open to the public. The Quinta gardens include the botanically diverse North and South Arboretums, the Citrus Spiral, Fruit and Olive orchards, Kitchen, Herb, Mexican, Plaid, three Rose Gardens and a wisteria pergola. The trees, shrubs, flowers, vegetables and other ornamental plants are cultivated for their rarity and conservation, education and enjoyment of the visitor, The choice of plantations offers visitors year round garden flowerings and interest.
Future plans include the creation of a labyrinth and water gardens, (including a biological swimming pool, canals and a reservoir for recycling of grey waters) etc.
I, Annabelle, live at the quinta about half of the year - coming and going between Portugal and France. I am assisted by Wendy Williams who lives on the other side of the hamlet of Sobreiro, and two gardeners who live in nearby villages. Presently we are two Portuguese, one Brazilian, one English and a Franco American who work the gardens and undertake guided tours.
We will welcome any age or nationality to come and assist in the general maintenance of the gardens, planting, weeding, harvesting grapes and olives, land cleaning and maintenance, transforming fruit and vegetables, construction and helping in the creation of the labyrinth and the fresh water pools.
Working hours and days may vary with the seasons and the weather, but basically 25 hours per week would be the norm and at least 2 full days off work.
Meals are eaten together on working days and help with cooking is expected.
Accommodation is in a room with bathroom with shower, washbasin and WC in a separate house in the quinta with one double bed, desk and chest of drawers, wifi, microwave, electric kettle, toaster and breakfast & tea dishes, mini refrigerator, etc.
It would be useful if WWOOFers bring their own torch and work gloves, boots and any medication which they might need and which could be difficult to find here.
WiFi available, occasional use of the company car as available for leisure visits, extensive library of books and magazines on gardening, Portuguese tourism, art and culture, french and english literature, CDs language lessons, etc.
No Smoking please!
Skills necessary; drivers licence as the location of the quinta is considerably rural.
