We have been living in Monchique for 16 years and on this property for the last 5. Our aim is to work towards establishing a self-reliant homestead and a rural tourism for people seeking silence and nature. We are in our 50s and 60s and have a wide range of interests. John is an engineer with enormous experience in appropriate technology. He worked in this sector in Southern Africa before moving to Portugal. I have a background in languages. We have a 22 year son studying in the US and a 18 year old daughter, currently taking a year off at home.
We would like to fast-track our vision for this property and therefore need extra hands. This includes, clearing new areas, building chicken shed, maintaining stone walls, planting trees, flowers, vegetables, managing wood lot and general upkeep.
Accommodation is in the spare room in our house with shared bathrooms. Our diet is mainly vegetable based. We have internet but no broadcast TV. Good library of books on alternative living and gardening. Non-smoking policy in the house. Because we are off-grid, care needs to be taken with energy use. No central heating - yet!
Mountain weather is unpredictable, so warm clothing, waterproof coat, good walking/working shoes important.
