Living Seeds - Sementes Vivas (LSSV) is an organic seed company, founded in 2015 and based in Idanha-a-Nova, central Portugal, near the Spanish border. Nested in the beautiful landscape of the Beira Baixa, our farms integrate seeds, vegetables and olive oil production. Our 200 hectares are farmed in accordance with Biodynamic principles, aspiring to be an ecological and economic model of sustainability.
Our team consists of 30 passionate, experienced people with backgrounds in organic and biodynamic agriculture, seed production, plant breeding, marketing and sales.
We operate our own seed production site of 25ha in addition to external multiplier fields. Currently LSSV is working with 17 multipliers across Portugal. Our company is mostly producing for Mediterranean countries, as well as some special varieties for Northern European clients. Quality control, storage, packaging and distribution of the seeds are happening on site.
LSSV is also very involved in education, consulting, training and the dissemination of organic and biodynamic topics across Portugal. We organise seminars on a variety of subjects including a yearly 2 days conference, courses on Biodynamic farming, our first permaculture design course and counselling for our growers.
For the moment there are no living quarters on the farm yet, so we are all commuting. While volunteering at LSSV a designated team member will host you in one of our two guesthouses that are located in Idanha-a-Nova. Staying at these houses will require you to contribute with your share of cleaning and other chores.
Transfers to the farm which is 20 minutes away and back home will be organized according to a fixed schedule. It is important to realize that, as there is only a limited number of cars available, we are depending on each other concerning transport and that there is restricted freedom of movement if you don't have an own car. That also applies to your free time. There are a few walking trails departing directly from Idanha, but most attractions are only to be reached by car.
The farm kitchen currently provides minimum three hot meals per working week, other than that there will be a budget for food and basic amenities. The kitchen team offers mostly vegan/vegetarian food. The team is very diverse not only in lands of origin but also in our diets and views on many things, so while the kitchen team cooks vegan other members of the LSSV team sometimes prepare meat on days when the kitchen team is not there.
At LSSV we are looking for volunteers:
Year round: field and garden work, social media, documentation / photography, handiwork and craftsm(wo)manship, cookery / kitchen-help.
Seasonally: Olive harvest (October), seed processing and events
